What: The purpose of this program is to create the foundation for biomass-related project development in northern Ontario. This project will provide five small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with consulting and research services that will help position them for expansion and/or realignment in their sector.

Who: The Biomass Innovation Centre at Nipissing University will provide technical and business support to SMEs in northern Ontario by offering research and consulting services at very attractive rates.

Why: Many SMEs in northern Ontario don’t have the staffing or financial resources to be able to conduct a pre-feasibility/baseline study to determine if a project is worth investigating further. Often, SMEs have great ideas for expansion or diversification, but their ideas get shelved because they don’t have the time or money to investigate further. Other SMEs skip the pre-feasibility/baseline study in order to save time and money, only to find out that their proposed business venture doesn’t make economic sense. In the end, they have wasted resources on a project that wasn’t feasible to begin with. This project will provide the staffing and financial resources to help SMEs determine if it is worthwhile to proceed to the feasibility stage, or what prospects appear worth studying further. This project will lay the foundation for SMEs to develop strategic business plans and undertake feasibility studies.
