In conjunction with the Energy Opportunities Conference in Sault Ste. Marie, the Biomass Innovation Centre (BIC) delivered a professional development session titled The 123’s of Crops, Waste and Trees. This session was designed as an introductory course for participants to build the necessary background for the development and use of biomass energy, chemicals, composites and materials in Ontario.

The content within this session was primarily derived from the BIC’s education curriculum which is currently being implemented into various civil, mechanical and power engineering programs in Ontario’s colleges. This session covered key facets within the broader bioeconomy, and as such was suitable for a wide range of professionals involved in the biomass sector – including post-secondary students.

The session included:
• Biomass Basics and Sustainability
• Sources of Biomass
• The Biomass Value Chain
• Biomass Conversion Technologies
• Biofuels
• Biochemicals and Biocomposites
• Bioenergy Systems

This professional development is worth 5 Professional Development Hours (PDHs) for submission to one’s respective professional association or company. The BIC recommends that individuals confirm with their respective organizations to determine if PDHs can be awarded.

For more information on our training sessions and education curriculum please contact Jeff Borisko at or by telephone at 705-474-3450 ext. 4132.
