Anishinabek Nation and Nipissing University - MOU Signing

On July 18, 2014, the Union of Ontario Indians (secretariat to Anishinabek Nation) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Nipissing University’s Biomass Innovation Centre to work towards the development of a bioeconomy strategy for First Nations and northern Ontario.

This partnership demonstrates the parties' commitment to exploring business opportunities that would support a sustainable bioeconomy for northern Ontario. Activities within the MOU include mapping the current capacity for innovation and bioproducts development in northern Ontario, developing industry and community partnerships, developing domestic and foreign markets for northern Ontario bioproducts, and more.

The MOU was signed by Walter Manitowabi (Chief Operating Officer) and Jason Laronde (Director of Lands and Resources) of the Union of Ontario Indians, and Dr. Michael DeGagné (Vice-Chancellor and President) and Dr. Harley d’Etremont (Provost and Vice-President of Academic and Research) of Nipissing University.
